Finding the Perfect Twig
Choosing a hockey stick can be overwhelming with all the technical specs. Here's how to break it down.
Understanding Flex
Flex refers to how much a stick bends when pressure is applied. A general rule of thumb is to start with a flex number that is roughly half your body weight in pounds. If you weigh 160 lbs, an 80-flex stick is a good starting point.
Blade Curves
The curve pattern (or "P") determines how the puck sits on your blade. The P29 or P28 curves are the most popular universal patterns, offering a good balance for both passing and shooting.
Stick Length
While standing in your skates, the stick should reach somewhere between your chin and your nose. Beginners often benefit from a slightly longer stick to help with reach and balance.
