The Foundation of Your Game

Selecting your first pair of hockey skates is the most important equipment decision you'll make. Unlike sneakers, skates should fit extremely snug — typically 1 to 1.5 sizes smaller than your shoe size.

1. The Right Fit

Your toes should just barely brush the end of the toe box when standing straight. When you drop into a hockey stance (knees bent), your toes should pull back slightly from the front.

2. Heat Molding (Baking)

Modern skates are designed to be "baked" in a specialized oven at the pro shop. This softens the composite materials, allowing the skate to mold perfectly to the unique shape of your foot, significantly reducing break-in time.

3. Blade Maintenance

Don't forget the steel! New skates often come with a factory grind that isn't ideal for skating. Get them sharpened before your first session, and aim for a 1/2" or 5/8" hollow to start.
