Planning Your Winter Wonderland
Building a backyard rink is a labor of love. Success starts in the fall, long before the first freeze.
Site Selection
Find the flattest part of your yard. Even a 6-inch slope can require significantly more water and stronger boards to handle the weight of the ice. Avoid areas with heavy sun exposure if possible.
Board Design
Simple 2x12 lumber is the gold standard for backyard boards. They are sturdy enough to support the ice and take the occasional puck impact. Ensure you have strong triangular braces every 4-5 feet.
The Liner
Don't use cheap blue tarps. Invest in a white, 6-mil wide-width poly liner. White reflects sunlight, keeping your ice colder and preventing it from melting through on sunny winter days.
